Car scratch repair cost: surface marks vs deep paint damage

Published 22 August 2026Reviewed 23 August 2026By AutoToolsUK Editorial Team 11 min read

A mark in the clear coat may polish out; a scratch through colour or primer needs paint. That difference explains why two scratches of similar length can receive very different estimates.

The short answer

  • A light clear-coat mark may polish out; exposed colour, primer, metal or plastic normally needs a different repair.
  • Length alone does not set the price: depth, location, panels, paint finish and blending are major cost factors.
  • Do not aggressively polish an unknown scratch or leave exposed metal unprotected.

A practical scratch price ladder

A small clear-coat or localised scratch may fall around £75–£150. Paint loss commonly moves a repair into roughly £150–£350, while a long, deep or multi-panel scratch can reach £300–£700 or more because preparation and blending multiply.

The calculator uses the visible depth, size, affected panels and paint type to place the damage within a planning range.

Do not diagnose depth by colour alone

Paint transferred from another object can look severe but sometimes cleans away. Conversely, a narrow line can expose primer or metal. Do not aggressively polish an unknown mark: clean it gently and let a competent repairer assess the layers.

Quick checklist

  • Take one photograph straight on and one at an angle
  • Show the complete panel
  • Mention exposed metal or plastic
  • Protect exposed metal from moisture while awaiting advice

SMART repair or full-panel paint?

Small localised damage may suit SMART repair. Damage near an edge, across several panels, on a complex colour or spread over a large area may need full-panel preparation and blending. Ask the repairer to name the proposed method in writing.

A simple way to inspect a scratch safely

Gently wash and dry the area first, because dirt and paint transfer can disguise the true mark. View it in daylight from several angles. If the scratch catches a fingernail, shows a different colour underneath, reveals bare metal or plastic, or crosses a panel edge, report that in the request.

Avoid aggressive compounds, touch-up paint or sanding before obtaining quotes. They can change the repairable area, hide useful evidence and make colour work harder. Exposed metal should be kept clean and dry while you arrange advice.

What a written scratch repair quote should state

Look for the number of panels, preparation method, local or full-panel paint, blending, trim removal, paint system, VAT and warranty. If the scratch runs across a door and adjacent quarter panel, confirm whether both panels and any blending panel are included.

For leased or financed vehicles, check the return standard before choosing a cosmetic shortcut. A low-cost improvement and a manufacturer-standard finish are not always the same outcome.

Questions drivers ask

Can toothpaste remove a car scratch?

Household abrasives are not a controlled automotive repair. A light mark may appear reduced, but unsuitable abrasion can dull the clear coat. Use an appropriate professional assessment when the depth is uncertain.

Does a scratch through to metal need quick attention?

Exposed metal can corrode. Keep it clean and dry and ask a repairer how soon it should be protected; do not apply an unknown product if you still need an accurate quote.
